To Austen Angell…

How can we be so fortunate to work in a business like this?

New things turn up all the time. How can we be so fortunate
to work in a business like this? It has been and continues to be
a very exciting life and I feel so deeply privileged to have been
able to share it with so many fine, intelligent, and unbelievably
enjoyable colleagues both in this country and around the world.
To all of you, only a few of whom I have found ways to mention
here, I say a heartfelt “Thank you!” and “Let there be more”.

Today, the world lost a great man and a great scientist.
Today, I lost a mentor, advocate, and role-model who shaped me as a scientist and a person. Austen was a remarkable and prolific scientist. With an H-Index of 113, 100+ PhDs/PostDocs, and pretty much winning every prestigious award in his field, few people come close to his status in the scientific world.

What I appreciate most about him is his positivity, his unquenchable thirst for knowledge and understanding, and his supportive role during my grad-school years.

Austen! “Thank you!” For teaching us to be curious and humble.
“Thank you!” for teaching us to never be afraid to ask a “naive question”.
“Thank you!” for signing my thesis.

I consider myself lucky to have crossed paths with you, and you are truly missed!

If you know him, feel free to write something here:
